I've written the essay but I had to use the quote and cite method rather than paraphrase and cite and I'm confused on how to cite my work. I got all of my information in chapter 9 section 1 of my textbook.

You need to have the textbook cited in TWO places:

1. the Works Cited page that is placed after the last page of your paper, and
2. in parentheses in the text of your paper, immediately after the quotation or paraphrase.

Here's an example of what will go on the Works Cited page with proper indentation for the second and following lines:

Barnet, Sylvan, William Burto, and William E. Cain. An Introduction to Literature. New York: Pearson Longman, 2004.

... and this (last name of author and page number) will go immediately after the quotation or whatever:
(Barnet 10)

The information in parentheses in the text needs to be as brief as possible. That's why there's a Works Cited page – for all the details of the listing.

Here's a good place for information on citing in MLA format:

Hold your cursor over the words CITING SOURCES in the left column and then click on Books. Many examples will show up. You will get two examples for each type of reference – one for the Works Cited page and one for the parenthetical (in-text) citation.

You can also see what a Works Cited page looks like – click on Sample Works Cited in the left column.

Let me know if you have questions.

To cite your work using the quote and cite method, you will need to include the citation in two places: the Works Cited page and in parentheses in the text of your paper.

On the Works Cited page, you will list the full citation for the textbook. The citation should include the author's last name, first name, the title of the textbook (in italics or underlined), the place of publication, the publishing company, and the year of publication. Here is an example:

Barnet, Sylvan, William Burto, and William E. Cain. An Introduction to Literature. New York: Pearson Longman, 2004.

In the text of your essay, immediately after the quotation or paraphrase, you will include a brief citation enclosed in parentheses. The citation should include the author's last name and the page number where the information can be found in the textbook. For example:

(Barnet 10)

Please note that the information in parentheses in the text should be as brief as possible, as the Works Cited page provides all the detailed information.

If you need more examples and guidance on citing sources in MLA format, you can visit the website (link removed). On that website, you can hover over "CITING SOURCES" in the left column and click on "Books" to find many examples of citations for different types of references. You can also click on "Sample Works Cited" to see what a Works Cited page should look like.
