1. An apple was cut into 8 equal-size pieces. Stacy ate 1/4 of the apple. Tony ate 3/8 of the apple. What part of the apple did Stacy and Tony eat in all?

A. 1/2

B. 5/8

C. 3/4

D. 1/4
2. Rick worked in his garden on Friday. He pulled weeds for 5/6 hour, planted seeds for 1/2 hour, and watered for 1/6 hour. How much time did Rick spend working in his garden on Friday
A. 1/2 hour

B. 1 hour

C. 1 1/3 hour

D. 1 1/2 hours

question 1 is b

question 2 is d

Please use appropriate school subjects for your questions. I have updated the school subject of this question to "fractions". Thank you.

Um aren’t you supposed to help me?

Can you show the steps?

ok. i found out that 5/6 is = 50 mins and I added the half an hour (30 mins) and added to that the 1/6 (10 mins) all together to get 90 which i subtracted 60 mins from 90 mins to get 30 so 1 hour 30 is the answer. thats how i did question 2. please wait for question 1 while i type

so question 1 is it was cut into 8 slices so i took the fraction 1/4 and made it into an addable fraction by making the 4 an 8 so i also doubled the 1 to a 2. then i added on the 3/8 fraction onto the 2/8 fraction to get 5/8 of the apple eaten. I hope this helps explain

Thanks

1. To calculate the part of the apple that Stacy and Tony ate in total, we need to add the fractions representing the portions each of them ate.

Stacy ate 1/4 of the apple, so her portion is 1/4.

Tony ate 3/8 of the apple, so his portion is 3/8.

To add fractions, we need to find a common denominator. The least common multiple of 4 and 8 is 8, so we can rewrite the fractions with a denominator of 8:

Stacy's portion: 1/4 = 2/8 (multiply numerator and denominator by 2 to get the denominator 8)
Tony's portion: 3/8 remains the same

Now we can add the fractions:

2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8

Therefore, Stacy and Tony together ate 5/8 of the apple.

The correct answer is B. 5/8.

2. To calculate the total time Rick spent working in his garden, we need to add the fractions representing the time for each activity.

Rick pulled weeds for 5/6 hour.
Rick planted seeds for 1/2 hour.
Rick watered for 1/6 hour.

To add fractions, we need to find a common denominator. The least common multiple of 6 and 2 is 6, so we can rewrite the fractions with a denominator of 6:

Time spent pulling weeds: 5/6 remains the same
Time spent planting seeds: 1/2 = 3/6 (multiply numerator and denominator by 3 to get the denominator 6)
Time spent watering: 1/6 remains the same

Now we can add the fractions:

5/6 + 3/6 + 1/6 = 9/6

To simplify the fraction, we divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, which is 3:

(9/3)/(6/3) = 3/2

Therefore, Rick spent 3/2 hours working in his garden.

The correct answer is C. 1 1/2 hours.
