Another way to decrease the magnetic force is by changing the current flowing through the electromagnet. He could have also change the type of core metal he was using to make the decrease the magnetic force. He could have also change the size of the wire he was using, a smaller wire will increase the resistance and reduce the current flowing weakening the field.
