Ideas on how to start this essay question?

Discuss whether current Australian law is effective in protecting people by i) criminalising certain kinds of behaviour and communication on social media and ii) providing “stronger” criminal punishment and civil damages aimed at deterring potential offenders.
I have sections I know what I want to write about, just not sure how to start them off :/
- Problems with current laws
- How other countries deal with the problem
- Social media laws in the future
- Effectiveness as a deterrent

Generally we should write the introduction last. Write the body of your essay, and then, you'll probably have ideas for your introduction. Think of it this way -- you can't introduce someone until you know him/her.

"Discuss whether current Australian law is effective in protecting people..."

Have you decided yet whether current law is or isn't effective?

Your answer to that question should be the basis of your thesis statement. Then the rest of your paper will have paragraphs that support that thesis.

And as Ms. Sue said, write the intro last. The intro paragraph should have your thesis statement at the end of it, so the rest of the paragraphs make sense -- support that thesis.

To start off your essay on whether current Australian law is effective in protecting people by criminalizing certain behavior on social media and providing stronger punishments, here are a few ideas for each section:

1. Problems with current laws:
- Begin by introducing the current state of social media and its impact on society, highlighting the increasing concerns about harmful behavior and communication.
- Discuss some of the challenges faced by Australian law in addressing these issues effectively.
- Mention specific cases or examples that illustrate the limitations or loopholes in the current laws.
- End your introduction with a clear thesis statement that states your stance on the effectiveness of the current laws.

2. How other countries deal with the problem:
- Start by acknowledging that Australia is not the only country grappling with these issues and that other nations have also implemented measures to address them.
- Provide a brief overview of how certain countries have approached social media regulation and discuss the effectiveness of their strategies.
- Highlight any key differences or similarities between Australia's approach and that of other countries.

3. Social media laws in the future:
- Begin by addressing the need for evolving laws and regulations in response to the ever-changing landscape of social media.
- Discuss emerging trends or proposed legislation in Australia that aim to strengthen the protection of individuals on social media platforms.
- Analyze the potential impact of these future laws, considering their feasibility and practicality.

4. Effectiveness as a deterrent:
- Begin by explaining the concept of deterrence and its relevance to criminal punishment and civil damages in social media offenses.
- Discuss empirical evidence or studies that examine the effectiveness of these punishments as a deterrent in similar contexts.
- Consider the counterarguments, such as the influence of other factors beyond legal consequences in shaping behavior on social media.
- Conclude by evaluating the overall effectiveness of the current Australian law in deterring potential offenders on social media.

Remember to transition smoothly between sections and paragraphs, using appropriate conjunctions or linking phrases to create a cohesive flow throughout your essay. This will ensure that each section is introduced effectively and that your arguments are logically developed.
