My locker combination has three digits. None of the digits are 0. What is the probability that the first digit of my locker combination is less than 3?

Aren't there only 2 numbers which are less than 3 ?

So clearly the probability is 2/9

would it not be 2/3.. im not sure but the we know that digits for each one dont go over 9 and none of the digits are 0.... so its either 2/3 (1,2,3) or 3/9 because thats out of 9 that the 3 numbers would be i know im not super good at explaining these things but i hope this helps

i don't think that's correct because that's not any of my answer choices but thx for trying

btw my answer choices are

A) 1/3
B) 1/2
C) 2/9
D) 3/10

Thank you both for all your help, i'm normally really good in math but i don't understand probability. =)

To find the probability that the first digit of your locker combination is less than 3, we need to determine the total number of possible combinations and the number of combinations where the first digit is less than 3.

Since each digit in the combination can range from 1 to 9 (excluding 0), there are 9 options for each digit. Therefore, the total number of possible combinations is 9 * 9 * 9 = 729.

To calculate the number of combinations where the first digit is less than 3, we need to consider the possibilities for the first digit:

1. If the first digit is 1, there are 9 options for the second digit and 9 options for the third digit. So, there are 1 * 9 * 9 = 81 combinations where the first digit is 1.
2. If the first digit is 2, there are 9 options for the second digit and 9 options for the third digit. So, there are 1 * 9 * 9 = 81 combinations where the first digit is 2.

Therefore, the number of combinations where the first digit is less than 3 is 81 + 81 = 162.

Finally, to find the probability, we divide the number of desired outcomes (combinations where the first digit is less than 3) by the total number of possible outcomes.

Probability = Desired Outcomes / Total Outcomes
Probability = 162 / 729

Simplifying the fraction, we get:
Probability = 2 / 9

Therefore, the probability that the first digit of your locker combination is less than 3 is 2/9.
