Are ratios and fractions the same thing? If they aren't, then what's the difference between them?

Suppose you have a bag full of apples and oranges totalling 12.

5 of those the fruits in the bag are apples
So 5/12 of the bags content consists of apples, that means 7/12 of its content
are oranges.
Or think of a pizza divided into 8 parts, you eat 3 slices and Peggy eats 5 slices
The fraction of the pizza that Peggy ate is 5/8
The fraction of the pizza that you age is 3/8
The ratio of the pieces you ate to the pieces Peggy ate is 3 : 5
The ratio of the pieces that Peggy ate to yours is 5 : 3

In my first example, the ratio of apples to oranges is 5 : 7

Many people confuse ratio with fractions, even though they are closely related, they are quite the same.
Hope my two examples show how they are connected.

Thank you

Ratios and fractions are related concepts, but they are not exactly the same thing.

A fraction represents a part-to-whole relationship. It consists of two numbers separated by a fraction bar or a forward slash (/). The number on the top is called the numerator, and the number on the bottom is called the denominator. The numerator represents the number of equal parts being considered, while the denominator represents the total number of equal parts in the whole.

For example, in the fraction 3/4, the numerator is 3 (representing three parts) and the denominator is 4 (representing the whole divided into four equal parts).

A ratio, on the other hand, is a comparison of two or more quantities. It compares quantities A to B and is typically expressed as A:B or A/B. Ratios can be simplified or written as fractions, but they don't necessarily have to be fractions.

For example, if you have written a test and scored 80 out of 100, you can express it as a ratio by comparing the scored marks (80) to the total marks (100). The ratio would be 80:100, which can be simplified to 4:5. Note that it can also be expressed as a fraction, which would be 80/100, simplified to 4/5.

In summary, fractions are a specific form of ratio that specifically represent a part-to-whole relationship. Ratios, on the other hand, are a general way of comparing quantities and can be expressed in various forms, including fractions.
