. Eun-Kyung works as a tutor and earns $60 per

hour. She has $792 in savings. She is planning an
anniversary party for her parents. She would like to
invite 40 guests. The party will cost her $1,520 for food
and drinks and $150 for the photographer. She will also
have a favor for each of the guests, and each favor will
cost $7.50. How many hours must she tutor to have
enough money for the party?

Ima bit lazy. So do 2 for 1 to save time.

Shower budget Penny is planning a baby shower
for her daughter-in-law. The restaurant charges $950
for up to 25 guests, plus $31.95 for each additional
guest. How many guests can attend if Penny wants the
total cost to be no more than $1,500?

I tried to solve this one just like how oobleck showed for the other problem. I was no where near the right answer. I know that 31.95x is give because we dont know how additional guest was going

cost for the party:

1529+150+7.50*40 = c
c-792 = m, the amount she still needs
m/60 = # hours to work to pay for it.

so, you need
950+31.95x <= 1500
31.95x <= 550
x <= 17.2
So she can only invite 17 additional guests...
So, where is your work? How do you know you're wrong?

You made a mistake. It's 1520 and not 1529

okay so the cost of the party is..
C=67100
67100-792 is M=66308
66308/60 is 1105 hours?
but the book says 42 guests

it should be 20 hours but how?

To find out how many hours Eun-Kyung must tutor to have enough money for the party, we need to calculate the total expenses for the party and subtract it from her savings. Then, we can divide the remaining amount by her hourly rate to determine the number of hours needed.

1. Calculate the total cost of favors:
- Number of guests: 40
- Cost per favor: $7.50
- Total cost of favors: 40 * $7.50 = $300

2. Calculate the total cost of the party:
- Cost of food and drinks: $1,520
- Cost of photographer: $150
- Cost of favors: $300
- Total cost of the party: $1,520 + $150 + $300 = $1,970

3. Calculate the remaining amount:
- Eun-Kyung's savings: $792
- Remaining amount after deducting party expenses: $792 - $1,970 = -$1,178

Since the remaining amount is negative, it means Eun-Kyung does not have enough savings to cover the party expenses. Therefore, she needs to tutor for an additional amount of money equal to or greater than $1,178.

4. Calculate the number of hours she needs to tutor:
- Cost per hour of tutoring: $60
- Number of hours needed: $1,178 / $60 = 19.63

Since Eun-Kyung cannot tutor for a fraction of an hour, she will need to tutor for 20 hours to earn enough money to cover the party expenses.
