Two planes leave simultaneously from Chicago's O'Hare Airport, one flying due north and the other due east (see figure). The northbound plane is flying 50 miles per hour faster than the eastbound plane. After 3 hours the planes are 2840 miles apart. Find the speed of each plane in mi/h for northbound plane and eastbound plane (eastbound and northbound should be calculated seperated). (Round your answers to the nearest whole number.)

hello why no answer?

hello - why no work?

If the slower plane's speed is x, then after three hours you have a right triangle such that
(3x)^2 + (3(x+50))^2 = 2840^2

the answer i got for:

eastbound plane: 643.93
northbound plane: -693.93
but when i submit it, the eastbound plane is correct but the northbound plane is wrong

why do you think it's a negative velocity?

i don't know i used quadratic formula and i both those answers

how do i get the northbound plane

x and x+50

NOT the two solutions for x
