For this assignment, I have to compare and contrast two songs I enjoy and use at least 3 poetic devices. The songs I have chosen are "Rewrite the Stars" from the movie The Greatest Showman and "Something Just Like This" by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay. So far, I have that "Rewrite the Stars" uses alliteration, personification, and metaphors. "Something Just Like This" uses alliteration, allusion, and repetition. I was thinking that "Something Just Like This" also uses metaphors because the whole song is comparing what they are (imperfect, not superhuman) to what they want to be (superhumanly perfect) And I need some help finding two reasons on how they are alike and unalike (one for alike and one reason for unalike) If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I have my thesis statement. "Rewrite the Stars and Something Just Like This are different as Rewrite the Stars uses personification and metaphors, it is a duet, and the chorus does not repeat itself, it changes each time, while Something Just Like This uses allusion and repetition, it is sung by one person, and the chorus repeats itself, they are also similar as they both use alliteration, both are about love, and includes opinions about the people in the song." Is this a good thesis?

No. Thesis statements must be much more focused (and far less wordy).

To compare and contrast the songs "Rewrite the Stars" and "Something Just Like This," you have identified three poetic devices used in each song. Now, let's find two reasons on how they are alike and one reason on how they are different.

1. Alike: Theme of Love and Aspiration
Both songs share a common theme of love and aspiration. In "Rewrite the Stars," the lyrics express the desire to overcome obstacles and be with the person they love against all odds. Similarly, "Something Just Like This" portrays the longing for a fairy-tale romance, where the singers imagine themselves as superheroes to find love. Both songs convey the idea of reaching for something extraordinary in a relationship.

2. Alike: Effective Use of Alliteration
Both songs incorporate alliteration to enhance their lyrical impact. Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of consecutive words or syllables. For example, in "Rewrite the Stars," the line "Say that it's possible" uses alliteration with the repeated "s" sound. In "Something Just Like This," the line "She said where d'you wanna go?" also features alliteration with the repeated "w" sound. The use of alliteration adds musicality to the songs and helps to emphasize certain words or phrases.

Now, let's find one reason on how they are different:

1. Unalike: Setting and Tone
One distinguishing factor between the two songs is the setting and tone. "Rewrite the Stars" is from the musical film The Greatest Showman and embodies a romantic, theatrical atmosphere. It portrays a dramatic love story within a circus setting, which adds depth and intensity to the lyrics. On the other hand, "Something Just Like This" is a collaboration between The Chainsmokers and Coldplay in the style of electronic pop. The song has a more contemporary, upbeat tone and focuses on a more fantastical notion of love, centering around the idea of being a superhero. The setting and tone of the songs create distinct moods and storytelling approaches.

By analyzing the themes, poetic devices, and differences in setting and tone, you can now compare and contrast "Rewrite the Stars" and "Something Just Like This" more comprehensively for your assignment. Remember to provide specific examples from the lyrics to support your points.
