I am not sure how to help my 3rd grader on this one filling in what they are looking for as it doesn't make sense to me. Using place value to find the product. I know one way but not how they are asking for here.

6 x 40 = 6 x ____ tens - I know it would be 4 in the space here
= ____ tens = ____ - have no idea what they would be looking for

6 times 40 = 240 = 24 tens

thank you ms.sue - my granddaughter wrote!!!!!

Its been a couple years since I was last on there for my older grandchild but back again!!!!!! Always can count on help here!!

You are very welcome.

To help your 3rd grader with this question, you need to understand the concept of place value. Place value refers to the value of a digit based on its position in a number. In this case, we are multiplying 6 by 40 using place value.

Let's break it down step by step:

Step 1: Recognize the place value of the digit in the second number.
In the number 40, the digit 4 is in the tens place. This means that it represents 4 tens or 40.

Step 2: Multiply the digit in the first number by the value of the place in the second number.
We want to find out what 6 x ____ tens is. Since the digit 4 represents 40, we need to multiply 6 by 40. This gives us 240.

So, the solution to the equation 6 x 40 = 6 x ____ tens is 240.

In the second part of the question, when it asks for "____ tens = ____," it wants us to write 240 in terms of tens.

Since 240 is equal to 24 tens (each ten is worth ten), we can fill in the blanks as follows:

____ tens = 240 tens
____ = 24

Therefore, the solution to "____ tens = ____" is 24.
