When land is ceded, it means that it is officially surrendered. After the agreement between the Dakota people and Zebulon Pike in 1805, the U.S. government negotiated many land cession treaties with the Ojibwe and Dakota tribes throughout much of the 1800s.

Learn about these treaties and how they affected Native Americans. Click on the link below to view The Minnesota Treaty Interactive from the Minnesota Historical Society website.
