Mostly no one is exactly who they aspire to be. We live the lives we are born into and try to fit ourselves, our likes, responsibilities, and friends into the life we have and hope to make it work. In "Raymond's Run" Squeaky tries to balance her passion for running, her social life and reputation, and looking out for her older brother. She had her work cut out for her, with figuring out exactly what it is she wants for her life without even realizing that's what she's doing. Running in the race with her main competitor being Gretchen, and being told she should forfeit the race just so Gretchen could win made her want to win it more than she did in the first place, it's obvious that Squeaky is a complex character driven by her need for people to realize how strong a runner she is. The story revolves around Squeaky making the discovery that her brother Raymond is already half the runner she is and with her trading he could be 10 times better than even her dad ( the only runner in the neighborhood faster than Squeaky herself). With Gretchen,who is also a very talented runner, helping coach Raymond he could be a star athlete, everyone would know who he is.
