I have a paper to write on a modest proposal. Here is the actual assignment. in a 3-5 page essay, defend and support the idess Swift proposed in "A Modest Proposal". You must include modern examples and experience to develop your ideas as well as include discussions of swifts orignial essay. Your tone maybe either serious or satirical. THis is not merely a summary of and/or a reaction to the essay. It is a paper showing agreement with his ideas and working them out in modern times for a modern audience with modern concerns.

ok here is my question. I want to focus my paper on the use of welfare and how swifts proposal will work for that. Like for example one topic would be single parents and another topic would be people with a lot of children (with and without using invtro fertilization)and then the 3rd topic would be people who just have children for the sake of it and use the money for other things. I'm not sure if I am on the right track or not. Any help is aprreciated. thank you

It seems like you are on the right track for your paper on "A Modest Proposal" and how it relates to the use of welfare. Focusing on specific topics such as single parents, people with a lot of children (including those conceived with in vitro fertilization), and individuals who have children solely for the purpose of receiving welfare are valid areas to explore.

To effectively develop your ideas and support Swift's proposals, consider the following steps:

1. Read and Understand "A Modest Proposal": Begin by thoroughly reading Jonathan Swift's essay. Make sure you comprehend the objectives and arguments he presents. Pay attention to his tone, style, and satire as it will help you develop your own tone for your paper.

2. Research Modern Examples: Look for modern instances where welfare is being misused or where certain groups are taking advantage of the system. For single parents, you could explore situations where individuals purposely remain unmarried to maximize welfare benefits. In the case of people with a lot of children, you can examine instances where individuals intentionally have more children to receive more welfare support. The same goes for individuals who misuse welfare funds for purposes other than the wellbeing of their children.

3. Gather Data and Statistics: To support your arguments, gather data and statistics that highlight the prevalence or impact of the issues you are exploring. This could include information on the number of single parents receiving welfare, the average number of children in families receiving benefits, or cases where welfare funds were misused. Reliable sources such as government reports, academic journals, or reputable news outlets can provide valuable data.

4. Analyze Swift's Essay: Analyze the key arguments and satire used by Swift in "A Modest Proposal". Consider how he supports his ideas and uses satire to criticize society. Identify the techniques he employs and think about how you can apply them to modern examples in relation to welfare.

5. Formulate Your Thesis Statement: Based on your research and analysis, craft a strong thesis statement that clearly states your support of Swift's ideas within the context of modern welfare. Your thesis should outline the main points you will address in your essay.

6. Organize Your Essay: Create an outline for your essay to ensure a logical flow of ideas. Each main topic you mentioned (single parents, individuals with many children, misusing welfare funds) can form the basis of individual sections or paragraphs within your essay. Make sure to include a discussion of Swift's original essay in each section, relating it to the modern examples you provide.

7. Integrate Modern Examples: Use the research you collected to support your arguments and demonstrate how Swift's proposals could be applied or adapted to address the specific issues you are discussing. Be sure to balance your analysis with an understanding of the complexity of these topics and the potential ethical concerns surrounding them.

8. Maintain a Tone: Consider whether you want to adopt a serious or satirical tone for your essay. This should align with your thesis statement and the overall objective of your paper. Think about how Swift's tone in "A Modest Proposal" contributes to his argument and consider how a similar tone may enhance your own.

9. Revise and Edit: After completing your draft, revise and edit your essay. Ensure that your arguments are well-supported, clear, and properly connected to Swift's original essay. Check for grammar and spelling errors, and make sure your writing is coherent and concise.

Remember to consult your professor or instructor for any specific guidelines or preferences they may have regarding the structure or content of your paper. Good luck with your essay!
