what is the problem of conflicting duties?

Can you give an example of conflicting duties?

I forgot to say but what is the problem using Kant's ethics?

anyways:

Imagine a Nazi knocked on my door asking if were housing any jews. Some of the Jews were hiding the attic and some were hiding in the basement. Both hiding spots have secret trap doors that the Nazis would most likely miss unless they were thorough.

if I said Yes, there are Jews in the house, they would be killed as the Nazis would eventually find them.

if I refuse to answer, the Nazis would probably kill me.

Lying is against Kants ethics i believe so that is not an option.

"White lies" are often a result of conflicting duties: you have a duty to tell the truth, but if you do, there are negative consequences, so you lie. The problem is how to avoid the conflict. If you always tell the truth, you have no friends. If you lie, you lose friends.

This may help, but make sure you don't copy and paste to turn in an answer. Think the problem through for yourself and formulate your own response.

The problem of conflicting duties refers to a situation in which an individual or organization is faced with multiple ethical or moral obligations that cannot all be fulfilled at the same time. This can create a dilemma where choosing to prioritize one duty may lead to neglecting or violating another duty.

To understand the problem of conflicting duties, one must consider the ethical frameworks or principles involved. Different ethical theories prescribe different sets of duties or obligations, which may sometimes conflict with each other. For example, the duty to tell the truth might conflict with the duty to protect someone's privacy.

To address the problem of conflicting duties, one approach is to prioritize the duties based on their relative importance or the consequences of fulfilling or violating them. Another approach is to seek a compromise or find a middle ground that minimizes the conflict between duties. However, resolving conflicting duties is often a complex and challenging task, requiring careful ethical analysis and decision-making.
