If a horse trots 3 miles in 8 minutes and 15 seconds, how far can be trot in an hour at the same rate?

My answer:8 miles (I don't know if this is right though.)

I have seen many people saying 21 miles but 8 miles and 15 seconds times 7(because 3 miles times 7 equals 21 miles) is equal to 57 minutes and 45 seconds. I used the cross products strategy which simplified down to 21.81818... And since .818181 repeating is equal to 9/11ths, my answer was 21 and 9/11ths miles. But this answer could change to 21 or 22 if you want an approximation.

3 mi / 495 sec = ? mi / 3600 sec

60 miles is my answer???????

That can't be. If the horse trots 60 miles in 60 minutes, it's going a mile an hour.

3/8.25 = x/60

8.25x = 180

x = 21 miles in an hour

Correction -- a mile a minute!

I am so confused!!!!! A friend said the answer is the horse can trot 55.4 miles in an hour. I need school to be over. Lol

Let's look at it this way.

The horse goes 3 miles in about 8 minutes. If he goes 7 times as fast, he goes over 56 minutes -- or about an hour.

7 times 3 = 21 minutes
