Okay, so I don't have Microsoft Word for mac, but my school usually uses word documents. I can access them, but I can't read comments or anything else.
Do you have a Google Drive account? If so, you can import Word docs into Google Docs and see if that works. You should also be able to import them into Pages on your Mac.
