There are several types of thermometers available, each with its own method of measuring temperature. Here are some common types:

1. Digital Thermometer: This type of thermometer uses an electronic sensor to measure temperature. It typically has a digital display that shows the temperature reading. You can usually find digital thermometers in both oral and infrared (non-contact) versions.

2. Mercury-in-Glass Thermometer: This traditional thermometer consists of a glass tube filled with mercury, which expands or contracts based on the temperature. The temperature is read by looking at the height of the mercury column against a scale marked on the thermometer.

3. Infrared Thermometer: This type of thermometer measures temperature without physical contact by detecting the infrared energy emitted by an object. It is commonly used for non-contact body temperature measurement, as well as for measuring the temperature of objects or surfaces.

4. Thermocouple Thermometer: Thermocouples are made from two different metals that generate a voltage proportional to the temperature difference between their ends. A thermocouple thermometer measures this voltage to determine the temperature.

5. Bimetallic Thermometer: Bimetallic thermometers consist of two metal strips with different coefficients of expansion joined together. As the temperature changes, the strips bend, which moves a mechanical pointer on the thermometer display.

It's worth noting that there are many more specialized types of thermometers available for specific applications, such as the thermistor thermometer, resistance temperature detector (RTD), or thermopile thermometer. The choice of thermometer depends on the specific requirements and the level of accuracy needed for the temperature measurement.
