  1. Not sure what the "shortcut method" is, but if you can see that the data are symmetric about a middle value, that value is the mean.

    Clearly, the first set has mean=7.

    So, what about the 2nd set?
    5,15,30,40,45,55,60
    Hmmm. Not so clear. Better explain what your method involves.
