Why is

one fourth = 0.25 = 25%

Can someone please explain to me?

This is not a test question, but I am working on rational numbers at school and I want some help.
Thanks.

A quarter of a dollar is 25 cents, right? There are 4 quarters in a dollar.

Take a calculator and divide 1 by 4. The calculator shows 0.25. That's 25/100. Another way of writing 0.25 or 25/100 is 25%. Percent means "parts of 100".

To understand why one-fourth equals 0.25 or 25%, we need to examine the concepts of decimals and percentages.

Decimals are a way to express numbers that are not whole numbers. They include a decimal point to indicate a fraction of a whole. In the case of 0.25, the decimal point separates the whole number 0 from the fraction 25.

To convert a fraction to a decimal, we need to divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). In the case of one-fourth, we divide 1 by 4:

1 ÷ 4 = 0.25

So, one-fourth as a decimal is 0.25.

Percentages are another way to express fractions or proportions. The word "percent" literally means "per hundred." Thus, percentages are based on the idea of dividing a whole into 100 equal parts.

To convert a decimal to a percentage, we multiply it by 100 and add a percent sign (%). Here's the process:

0.25 × 100 = 25

Therefore, 0.25 as a percentage is 25%.

In summary:
- One-fourth as a decimal is 0.25, obtained by dividing 1 by 4.
- To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply it by 100 and add a percent sign (%). Thus, 0.25 as a percentage is 25%.
