Write the ratio as a unit rate

286 miles in 5 1/2 hours

Hallo! So, I do 286 / 5.5? 5.5 is the same as 5 1/2 but WHY divide? Sry I'm curious!

To write a ratio as a unit rate, you need to divide the two values in the ratio to find the rate of one unit of the first quantity to one unit of the second quantity.

For example, let's say we have a ratio of 5:3. To convert this ratio into a unit rate, we divide 5 by 3, which gives us a unit rate of 5/3. This means that for every 5 units of the first quantity, there are 3 units of the second quantity.

Another example would be a ratio of 20:8. To convert this into a unit rate, we divide 20 by 8, which gives us a unit rate of 2.5. This means that for every 20 units of the first quantity, there are 8 units of the second quantity.

So, to write a ratio as a unit rate, divide the first value of the ratio by the second value.

Thanks

You're welcome, Jack.
