Good evening. I am having a problem solving this problem and need some help step by step please. One tank is filling at a rate or 3/4 gallon per 2/3 minute. A second tank is filling at a rate of 5/8 gallon per 1/2 minute. What tank is filling faster?
Please explain step by step.
rate1=3/4*3/2=9/8
rate2=5/8*2/1=10/8
Good evening Mr. Pursley.
When you are saying for the following:
rate 1:
Would it be 3/4 divided by 2/3 and then flip the second fraction and multiply? How did you know from the word problem to do this?
3/4 MULTIPLY BY 2/3 EQUAL 9/8
rate is quanity/time. That is a division, and multiplication is the inverse operation of division
8/4 divided by 4/5= 8/4*5/4
Hello Mr. Pursley,
I guess where I am confused is what in this word problem showed or indicated to do this operation?
Hello Mr. Pursley,
Once the division is done and the answers are the following:
Tank 1=9/8
Tank 2= 10/8
The question is which tank is filling faster?
My answer the tank that is filling faster is Tank 2. Would this be correct?
