A saturated solution is a solution in which the maximum amount of solute has been dissolved in a solvent at a particular temperature. It is characterized by the presence of undissolved solute particles in equilibrium with the dissolved solute. To determine if a solution is saturated, you can follow this simple procedure:

1. Prepare a sample of the solution you are testing.
2. Continue adding solute to the solution while stirring until no more solute dissolves and a visible excess of undissolved solute remains at the bottom of the container.
3. Let the solution sit undisturbed for an extended period, typically overnight.
4. If the undissolved solute remains unchanged after this period, the solution is saturated.

This occurs because at a particular temperature, the solute particles dissolve in the solvent, but the rate at which they dissolve is balanced by the rate at which they precipitate out of the solution. Therefore, a saturated solution is at equilibrium and cannot dissolve any further solute at that temperature.
