  12. Johnny is wrong. The French voyageurs/traders did not establish settlements as in yeoman farmers. They established forts and missions. The forts were to protect their trade routes; the missions to convert the natives to Christianity. Of course, some crops were necessary to support the forts and missions, but settlement of the Great Lakes region and points west was not the goal of the voyageurs.
