Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum. Possibly you are looking for the use of gerunds (going, hunting, moving) and the passive voice (were thrown.) Are there really no capital letters (Now, etc.?) Knowing the author will help you also with a search engine to see the type of writing/grammar usually used.

SraJMcGin is right on! You have a repetition of passive voice "were going", "were hunting"... the it switches to active voice "wind arose" plus the word "NOW" (This is giving the picture of their going from a casual day fishing to a more dramatic scene. They are not doing the acting, the wind is)
Then it switches "Now" begins the sentence and is repeated for emphasis The scene takes on immediacy...and the word "immense" is thrown in.... The canoes are still passive in voice, the wind is taking an even more active part.

The passive voice is used again "were thrown", "were moving" to show the helplessness of those in the canoes.

The use of active and passive voice has given the writing a sense of drama and emotion.
