Which of the following solutions would have the highest boiling point?

(1) 5 liters of water
(2) 5 grams of salt dissolved in 4 liters of water
(3) 10 grams of salt dissolved in 3 liters of water
(4) 15 grams of salt dissolved in 2 liters water
(5) 20 grams of salt dissolved in 1 liter of water

Would it be # 2 how do I figure out this problem

  1. If you don't know how to figures it out how do you think or why do you think it is #2. Guessing?

    delta T = i*Kb*m
So, i, whatever i is, is the same for all of the choices. So is Kb, the boiling point constant for water; therefore, m, the molality is the only thing changing. Calculate m for the choices and the largest m will cause the most change in delta T. How do do m? That's m = mols/kg solvent and mols is calculated by mols = grams/molar mass. You don't say way which salt BUT since it's the same salt, that is a constant too. Just make up a number for grams. Post your work if you get stuck.

  4. No, B is not right. You need to go through the molality thing.
