We're reading Animal Farm by George Orwell, and I have a worksheet for ch. 8 to go along with it. There are two questions I don't understand, however -- can someone help me? Thanks! :)

2. Squealer's Sunday morning revelation of the increased production figures is a good example of what?

--- I didn't know it was THAT important to be related to something... ^_^

6. What vice have the pigs now adopted? This is against what commandment?

--- I know in this chapter they change the rule about alcohol consumption by the animals (Fifth Commandment), but these questions are in order by the chapter, and the next question after this one is about Squealer announcing Napoleon's impending death, even though the broken Fifth Commandment comes later in the chapter.

Thanks SO much this link definitely helped!! :-)

Sure, I'd be happy to help you understand these questions!

2. Squealer's Sunday morning revelation of the increased production figures is a good example of what?

To answer this question, you need to think about the significance or purpose of Squealer's announcement and what literary term or concept it might relate to. In Animal Farm, Squealer often manipulates information and uses propaganda to control the other animals on the farm. In this case, Squealer reveals false or exaggerated production figures to make it appear as though the farm is doing well and that the animals' hard work is paying off.

This type of manipulation of information is often seen in real-world situations as well, where political leaders or authorities may try to control public perception by distorting facts or presenting information in a biased way. One literary term that describes this technique is "propaganda." Propaganda is a form of communication that aims to influence people's opinions or behaviors by presenting information selectively or in a biased manner.

Therefore, the answer to question 2 could be that Squealer's Sunday morning revelation of the increased production figures is a good example of propaganda.

6. What vice have the pigs now adopted? This is against what commandment?

In Animal Farm, the pigs have adopted the vice of consuming alcohol. This goes against the original Fifth Commandment, which states, "No animal shall drink alcohol." The pigs, who have become the ruling class on the farm, gradually change the commandments to benefit themselves and justify their actions. In this case, the pigs start consuming alcohol even though it was explicitly prohibited in the initial set of commandments.

Regarding the order of the questions, it's possible that the worksheet is not perfectly aligned with the sequence of events in the book. It's important to focus on understanding the content of the chapter and the events that occur rather than getting too caught up in the order of the questions. Remember, the purpose of reading Animal Farm is to analyze the themes, characters, and events, so try to focus on those aspects as you answer the questions.

I hope this clarifies the questions for you! Let me know if you have any further questions or if there's anything else I can help you with.
