What is 1 7/12 - 3/20 equal to?

I tried to do this question but I couldn't quite get the answer. For the directions of the work, its says use the least common multiple as the denominator and when I came across this one, I couldn't quite get the answer. If anyone, who knows the answer, can tell me and explain why and how to do it. Thanks!

The least common multiple of 12 and 20 is 60.

1 7/12 = 1 35/60

3/20 = 9/60

1 35/60 - 9/60 = 1 26/60 = 1 13/30

Thanks Ms.Sue for helping me!

You're welcome, Nat.

To subtract mixed numbers like 1 7/12 and 3/20, the first step is to find a common denominator. In this case, the least common multiple (LCM) of 12 and 20 is 60.

Here's how to find the common denominator and subtract the numbers:

Step 1: Convert both mixed numbers to improper fractions.
1 7/12 = (12 * 1 + 7) / 12 = 19/12
3/20 = 3/20

Step 2: Write both fractions with the common denominator of 60.
19/12 = (19 * 5) / (12 * 5) = 95/60
3/20 = (3 * 3) / (20 * 3) = 9/60

Now that we have both fractions with the common denominator of 60, we can subtract them:

Step 3: Subtract the two fractions.
95/60 - 9/60 = (95 - 9) / 60 = 86/60

Step 4: Simplify the resulting fraction, if possible.
To simplify, we can divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, which is 2 in this case.
86/60 = (86/2) / (60/2) = 43/30

Therefore, 1 7/12 - 3/20 is equal to 43/30 or 1 13/30 when expressed as a mixed number.
