Semicolon.

2a. The Bears lost the Super Bowl to Indianapolis; worse yet, I lost a bet with my brother about the outcome of the game.

2b. The Bears lost the Superbowl to Indianapolia; worse yet; I lost a bet with my brother about the outcome of the game.

Which is correct for the usuage of the Semicolon and why?

Please see my last answer. Then, tell us which sentence is correct. We'll be glad to check your answer.

i see that there is 2 independent clauses, so i would use the semicolon, but the word between the 2 clauses, worse ye: or worse yet, is what is throughing me off.

Since "worse yet" is not an independent clause, you only need one semicolon in this sentence.

that's what i was thinking but i just wanted to make sure. Thank you

You're welcome. :-)

The correct usage of the semicolon in the given sentence is:

2a. The Bears lost the Super Bowl to Indianapolis; worse yet, I lost a bet with my brother about the outcome of the game.

The reason for choosing this option is that a semicolon is used to separate two closely related independent clauses, which are essentially complete sentences on their own. In this case, the two independent clauses are "The Bears lost the Super Bowl to Indianapolis" and "worse yet, I lost a bet with my brother about the outcome of the game".

By using a semicolon instead of a period or a comma, the writer is indicating a stronger relationship between the two ideas. It helps to show that the two clauses are equally important and related to each other. Additionally, the semicolon creates a smoother flow between the two thoughts, making the sentence easier to read and understand.
