I think you are doing fine with it.
The immigrant Europeans are assuming that because they have gunpowder they are more important and valuable. They offer the locals something of no value in return for centuries of needed skills because they have guns and can do so. The irony is that the people with the important skills for survival are the locals, not the guys with the guns.
