I am inclined to say Google it but you get a barrage of propaganda.
With the Balfour Declaration the English opened the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea to settlement by Jewish immigrants. That was kind of them but ignored the fact that people, namely Palestinians, already lived there. That is really the base of it. To get details Google it but be alert for dramatic propaganda from both sides because it is obviously a very emotional issue.
