- La Peregrina= The Pilgrim

Ok, so I have submitted the questions I have to answer in the form they were presented to me. Below the questions I have submitted my answers first in English and then how I have translated them into Spanish. (I did have difficulty with finding the answers questions 4 & 5).

The grandfather first had corresponded La Peregrinas previous visits to the day the shepherd had been lost and died while crossing the ravine; the day of The Snow Blitz. Next the grandfather had remembered when La Peregrina had mentioned the wedding of the Milady; she had seen the wedding from the woods. A blacksmith had promised to hunt a deer for the newlyweds and when the blacksmith had tried to drink from the creek, his gun went off, hit him and he died. La Peregrina told them that she had been visiting the day of the explosion in the mine, which had taken the lives of many people included the seven sons of Telva. The grandfather had been in the mine during the
explosion too. Finally, when fresh air had entered the mine, he was saved from death
but had remembered seeing the pale face and cold touch of La Peregrina.

2. ¿Para qué había venido la Peregrina? ¿Pudo cumplir con su deber?

La Peregrina explains to the Grandfather that she had come for the man whose horse she had saddled and spurred; she had come for Martín. La Peregrina could not do the duty that she had been sent for.

La Peregrina says she is a “good friend of the poor and men of good conscience”
because each day, she is always present and watching.

La Peregrina hears people complaining about life. But when she appears people become afraid of death because they do not know what is ahead. Because of the fear of the unknown, people view death as something that is treacherous and cruel.

Not knowing what is ahead is expected on the “other side”.

The “other side” and birth seem quite alike because, both journeys present the fear of not knowing what lies ahead.

La Peregrina explains that even though many people fear death, the grandfather
belongs to a people who have also learned to look death in the eye. This means that there are some people who do not fear death or see it as a defeat, instead they accept and understand death to be beautiful and desirable.

The greatest wiseman of the town called death, freedom as he bled to death. I believe he called death freedom because he was being freed from the tangible daily struggles of being human.

9. ¿Cómo describe la Peregrina su “destino amargo”?

La Peregrina has describes her destiny as bitter because most people condemn death do and do not understand it. She describes the loneliness of death and the sorrow it brings. Her bitter destiny is that she is forever doomed to kill and is unable to rest in peace.

10. ¿Qué había intentado hacer Adela?

Adela had intended to .

Adela había tenido la intención de suicidarse.

I'll send this to Sra.

1. In the English, line one, "la Peregrinas" does not match. Remove the "s" from "Peregrinas."

In the Spanish: It is not "the first grandfather" and I will have to go upstairs to the computer. There is just too much for the iPadPro, typing with one finger.

Sra

1. Spanish:

(adjective modifying her)

(Simplify if you can, but you must also answer the first part = what does she say..)

Let me start a new post with the 2nd half.

Sra

(I don't like writing it first in English and then translating into Spanish, because then the Spanish doesn't "flow.")

9. English: has describes? Incorrect English. See what I mean?

(OR Adela había intentado suicidarse.)

NOTE: I had my students keep a "hit list" of the errors they made. Then each time they proofread something, they looked specifically for those errors. #1 for you would be "number & gender of adjectives, depending upon what noun(s) they modified!"

It looks like you have done #4 & #5 well.

Do you know the significance of "la fiesta de San Juan?" Often, if you know more about the background of a work, it makes more sense!

Sra

No I do not know La fiesta de San Juan :( ok so next week I will focus harder on making sure the number and gender of adjs depending on the nouns they pertain to. Thank you again for all your help!

Tradtionally St John was the youngest of the Apostles, outlived the others and did not die a martyr.

The Fiesta de San Juan is the 24th of June, with the summer solstice. The origin is pagan and the rituals and customs are preChristian. This night is not only in Spain, but also in Europe, Latin America, Brazil and in some countries it is not celebrated in the summer, but in the winter.

The night of the 23rd of June is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, signifying the triumph of light over darkness. In the rituals, sun, fire and water and the ashes cure illnesses and having the bonfire 3 times assures a good year.

The "verbena" is like a county fair with singing, dancing, friends, sweethearts and on the "Noche Mágica" the girls collect verbena (herb) at midnight to find a novio, throwing "guinaldes" (garlands) into the fire

To answer questions 4 and 5, you could try analyzing the text for clues. Look for any statements or descriptions given by La Peregrina that suggest what people expect on the "other side" or why people see her as a "traitor and cruel." Also, consider the context of the story and the overall theme of death and fear of the unknown.

For question 4, La Peregrina hears people complaining about life, suggesting that she is aware of people's dissatisfaction with their current circumstances. When she appears, people become afraid of death because they do not know what lies ahead. This fear and uncertainty may lead people to view death as something treacherous and cruel.

For question 5, La Peregrina mentions that not knowing what is ahead is expected on the "other side." This suggests that after death, there is an unknown future or experience awaiting individuals. The "other side" can be seen as a metaphorical representation of the afterlife or what comes after death.

Remember, when answering questions like these, it's important to analyze the text and look for evidence to support your interpretation.
