Journal Entry 3: Prewriting and Thesis Statement

Brainstorm: Review the description of brainstorming in your textbook on page 111. Then write a list of all the social media and social networking websites and apps you might use to connect with friends and family and to meet people.

Respond: What are some differences among the sites you listed? How would you categorize them? (1 paragraph, 5 sentences)

Write a thesis statement: Review "Writing an Effective Thesis Statement" on pages 122-124 in your textbook. Then follow those guidelines to make an effective thesis statement based on the types of social media using the Brainstorm and Respond sections of this journal entry.

Reflect: Explain the position you've taken in your thesis statement and identify the items from your brainstorming list or categories that you believe will best support your position.

I've finished every section except "Reflect". I don't understand what they mean. Can someone please help me understand?

Did you make the list as instructed?

Then write a list of all the social media and social networking websites and apps you might use to connect with friends and family and to meet people.

If you followed the other directions, your thesis statement came from the ideas in your brainstorming list, right?

NOW ... choose the 3 or 4 STRONGEST items in your brainstorming list that will help you prove the point you are making (the position you've taken) in your thesis statement.

Why did you take the position of your thesis statement?

Which details best support that statement?

I might have done the other sections wrong. Would you be willing to review them for me?

For Brainstorm: I have Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Youtube, and Skype.

For Respond: I haven't written the paragraph yet, but I've jotted down a few things to put in it. The differences: Youtube and Twitter aren't the best way to communicate with family and friends (they're better for meeting new people). Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Skype are more for family and friends, but you can meet new people on Facebook and Instagram.
I would categorize Youtube and Twitter for mainly meeting new people and Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Skype for mainly communicating with family and friends.

For Write a thesis statement: Not only is social media great for communication with family and friends, it is also great for meeting new people.

Am I in the right direction or are there things I need to change?

Be sure to follow the directions in the order your instructor gave them.

~~ Write that paragraph!

~~ Then check here for examples of bad-made-good thesis statements.

~~Then you'll be ready to deal with the last instruction.

Is this okay?

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Skype are all great social media sites that you can use for communicating with family and friends, as well as meeting new people. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Skype are great tools to keep in touch with family and friends. However, you can still use Facebook and Instagram to meet new people. Youtube and Twitter aren't the best for communicating with family and friends, as it can be hard to find their accounts. Youtube and Twitter are better used for meeting new people. I would categorize Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Skype as the best way to communicate with loved ones, and Youtube and Twitter as the best way to meet new people.

Yes, that's fine.

Now ... work on drafting your thesis statement (the position you're taking, the point you want to prove). It may take several drafts, and be sure to go over that linked webpage several times to make sure you're writing an actual thesis statement!

ok so the first portion of this is just the statistics that I researched and what each does. I only choose a couple because there are many social media apps out there that have the same usage as some of the others. please feel free to edit or comment, this is a weak spot for me and I am open to as much help as other fellow scholars can offer. Thanks for the time whomever will spend on this subject.

Latest data out there as of this august
2017:

-Instagram(users use it to post information about travel, fashion, food, art and similar subjects. Videos and photo editing features.)

-Reddit (social news and entertainment networking website where users can submit content such as direct links and text posts.)

-LinkedIn (people looking to connect with people in similar industries, networking with local professionals and displaying business related information and statistics)

Explanation as to what my position is in my thesis statement and the apps of social media and brainstorming that supports my position in the matter.

My position I have taken in my thesis statement is that the social media network has moved societies communications forward after being so sparse. The fact that with this new found social media we have relied on sites such as Instagram for social travel pictures and food videos. Another relied on app is LinkedIn, a network that helps you connect with people in similar industries. Reddit is another social link to this new age app social media world, this one always you to check in on social news and entertainment, were you can submit content such as links that someone may have come across. The results of the statistics show; Instagram has had 700 million active users in recent studies. Redditt's amount is up to 16 million and LinkedIn 106,000,000.

In the "Reflect" section of your journal entry, you are being asked to explain the position you have taken in your thesis statement and identify the items from your brainstorming list or categories that you believe will best support your position.

To do this, start by reviewing your thesis statement. The thesis statement is the main argument or claim that you are making in your essay. It should be clear and specific. For example, if your thesis statement is "Social media platforms have a significant impact on communication and social interactions," then your position is that social media has a significant impact.

Next, look at the items from your brainstorming list or categories that you have identified as social media platforms and apps. Consider how these platforms or apps support your thesis statement. Think about the features, functions, and purposes of these platforms, and how they impact communication and social interactions.

For example, if one of the categories is "Messaging apps" and you have listed platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat, you can reflect on how these messaging apps facilitate instant communication and connection with friends and family, perhaps emphasizing the convenience and speed of communication.

In your reflection, explain why you believe these items from your brainstorming list or categories are relevant and supportive of your thesis statement. Provide specific examples or reasons to support your argument.

To summarize, in the "Reflect" section, you are essentially explaining your thesis statement and discussing how the items from your brainstorming list or categories align with and support your thesis.
