Write an essay in which you analyze the importance of plot events and characters’ actions to the development of a story’s theme. Review and evaluate a

story from the unit that has a clearly identifiable theme. You might choose “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, “The Story-Teller” by Saki, “The Finish of Patsy Barnes” by Paul Laurence Dunbar, or “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury. Be sure to identify the story and write a clear statement of its theme. In your essay, answer the following question: How do various elements of the story—conflict and resolution, characters’ dialogue and behavior—contribute to the story’s theme? Support your ideas with references to the text.

This is what I put.

In “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” The theme is developed when the main character Joby wants to join the war. The theme is to never give up and be brave. This is the theme because at the beginning of the story, the main character Joby is interested in joining the war as a drummer boy but he doesn’t think he can do it. Some conflict in this story is that Joby, the drummer boy, has an internal conflict with himself by being scared to die. The resolution is that Joby accepts his new role in the battle with solemn dignity and courage, believing that he is now connected to a “family” (the army), that he has an extremely important purpose, and that he will survive. The theme is noticed when Joby is scared of joining the army. And the theme is that you should never give up and to be brave.

You only really have to write a paragraph that shows how the theme is developed.
Hope this helps!

So, in the Drummer Boy of Shiloh, Joby was scared to go into war. He was very nervous, and I could tell because he had no confidence. He was so young! But the general lifted his confidence, by saying he was once scared, too.

Conflict: Joby was mad/angry because he didn't get a gun to fight in war. He thought being a drummer was stupid, and pointless. But the General told him his role was the most important. The general taught Joby how important his role in the Civil war was.

Falling Action: Joby relaxes, and prepares for war. He is confident and ready to go.

Resolution: Joby has gained his confidence, and leads them into war.

1. ... analyze the importance of plot events and characters’ actions to the development of a story’s theme.

2. Review and evaluate a
story from the unit that has a clearly identifiable theme....

Once you have chosen the story you want to write about (and make sure it meets the requirements in bold above), then you'll be ready to do the following:

3. Be sure to identify the story and write a clear statement of its theme.

4. In your essay, answer the following question:
~~ How do various elements of the story—conflict and resolution, characters’ dialogue and behavior—contribute to the story’s theme?
~~ Support your ideas with references to the text. [Do you know what "references" means here?]

If you have trouble knowing what the different elements of a story are, read and study this:

Ya Mr.Sue is right but "Me" changed it a bit

i don't understand the whole thing. This due on friday for homework.

but i want to turn it tomorrow for extra points.

Look up "the drummer boy of shiloh essay summary" on the internet and bam.

And you can take out sentences from here, put them in ya own words. Have at least 4-5 sentences.

1. What you think the theme is.
2. Why you think the theme is that.
3. Include a sentence from the summary in your own words to show reason.
4. Include another sentence just for reference.
5. Close the paragraph of why you think the theme is what it is.

Thank you guys so much! I was having problems understanding this assignment too. But, I'm still confused on the theme of "The Story Teller". I've read it many times and I can't make out any themes in the story. Can someone help me? I'm not asking for an exact answer, just the theme, or sentences from the story that hints the theme.
