music search help!

I was wondering if someone could help me find who were the popular women singers in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
You know the style of music that was playing in the movie Saving private ryan when the soldiers were waiting for the germans to come. You know that scene? When they were sitting within the rubble of the city. The record was playing? Something like kind of music.
And any other will really do.

I would really appreicate it a lot!

I didn't see this film, but this sites has several links to music from World War II.
