Why did Raymond Carver make "Popular Mechanics" ending so ironically different from the Biblical tale "The Wisdom of Solomon"?

Literature, like any art form, means what it means to the individual reader/viewer. I can't tell you what the story means to you, only what it might mean to me.

Why do YOU think he did what he did? What was Carver seemingly saying? That modern American life is not like the morality tales of the Bible? Was he just trying to be funny? What do YOU think?
