  1. rate of change is how fast y changes when x changes by 1.

    y = -2x+6
    Note that -2 in front of x. That is the slope of the line, or also the rate of change. You can see that adding 1 to x add -2 to y. So, -2 is the rate of change (of y with respect to x).

    y = -3x+10
    slope = -3

    You have to have y all by itself to read off the slope from the equation.

    3y = 9x+12
    y = 3x+4
    slope = 3

    hey if dy/dx= -2 why is it wrong to say that y is alwats decreasing at a rate of -2? I don't really get it. It is better to say that y is always decreasing with a slope of -2 on a graph of y(x), or at a rate of -2 per change in x.
