Non-living things, also known as inanimate objects, are commonly characterized by the following:

3. Inability to grow or reproduce: Living organisms have the capacity to grow and reproduce through cellular division or sexual reproduction. Non-living things do not possess this ability.

4. Lack of response to stimuli: Non-living things do not exhibit responses to external stimuli, such as changes in temperature, light, or sound, unlike living organisms, which have the ability to respond to their environment.

5. No capability for evolution: Living organisms can undergo evolutionary changes over time through genetic variations and natural selection. In contrast, non-living things stay the same over time and do not experience evolutionary processes.

To differentiate between living and non-living things, one can observe these characteristics. If an object exhibits traits like cellular structure, metabolism, growth, reproduction, response to stimuli, or evolution, then it can be considered a living organism. On the other hand, if an object does not possess these traits and does not display characteristics associated with life, it can be classified as non-living.
