I need some help with some questions.

Question #1: Which of the following most contributed to the rise of Sumer?

a. agriculture
b. trade
c. military conquest
d. monotheism

According to what I have studied Sumerians developed a civilization, but they also built irrigations canals, invented mathematics and the potter's wheel.

Another thing that I have studied is that the life-giving waters of the rivers made this possible by supporting agriculture. Farming increased the food supply and allowed people to stay in one place. With more stable food sources, populations grew. This meant that more people were able to spend less time searching for food and more time inventing new items like pottery and wheels, and developing new concepts, such as writing systems, organized religion, and governments.

I think the answer is A because farming contributed to the rise of Sumer.

Question #2: Which of the following best describes the early spread of Islam?

a. Arab military conquest
b. missionary work in Persia
c. Mesopotamian trade
d. Greek and Roman expansion

According to what I have studied I have no idea of the answer :-( What I know is that one important oasis was the city of Mecca. That was a trading and religious center. Many of the people who went there worshiped more than one god but that changed when Muhammad made Mecca a center for the new religion of Islam. Muslims woship only one god. So maybe the answer is C.

However within 10 years of Muhammad's death, Muslims under the first caliphs (the first caliph was Abu Bakr) conquered all of Arabia and Iraq. That brought the Muslim Empire into contact with ideas from around the world. So the answer could be A.

Question #3: How did Britain most impact the formation of modern nations in the region?

a. with economic and military support
b. though expanded trade oppotunities
c. by building modern schools for the region's young people
d. by mapmaking without regard for tribal and ethnic boundaries.

According to the textbook The Ottoman Turks conquered the region in the sixteenth century and would rule until their own defeat during World War I. Then the British took control. However, Britain had struck a deal with several key Arab rulers in exchange for their help during the war. As a result, Yemen, Syria, Saudi Arabia—and soon, Iraq—became independent kingdoms. However, the British mapmakers paid little attention to tribal and ethnic affiliations when they drew the borders. As British power weakened in the decades following World War II, the rest of the region would gain its independence, and the nations of Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates would form. So I think the answer is D.
