what is 3/4-3/8 ? I really don't under stand

Think about having a pizza divided in to 4 pieces.

Then think about a pizza divided into 8 pieces.

We are saying if I have 3/4 of a pizza, someone is going to remove 3/8 of it.

It doesn't make sense unless we are talking about the same sizes.. so we would change 3/4 to 6/8

That means I have 6/8 of the pizza and someone takes 3/8 of it.

That leaves me with 3/8

When you subtract fractions, they have to have the same denominators. You keep the denominators and subtract the numerators.

Thanks

To subtract fractions, you need to have a common denominator. The denominator is the bottom number of a fraction. In this case, the denominators are 4 and 8.

To find a common denominator, you can determine the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators, which is the smallest multiple that both numbers divide evenly into.

The LCM of 4 and 8 is 8, so we need to rewrite the fractions with a common denominator of 8.

Now let's proceed with the subtraction:

3/4 - 3/8

To rewrite the fractions with a common denominator of 8, we need to multiply the numerator and denominator of the first fraction (3/4) by 2, and the numerator and denominator of the second fraction (3/8) by 1:

(3/4) * (2/2) - (3/8) * (1/1)

Multiplying the numerators and denominators:

(6/8) - (3/8)

Now, since the fractions have a common denominator of 8, you can subtract the numerators directly:

6/8 - 3/8 = (6 - 3)/8 = 3/8

So, the answer to 3/4 - 3/8 is 3/8.
