Por ejem- plo, comunmente no sabe hablar ni leer español—y no quiere aprender, y espera que todo el mundo hable inglés. Este tipo no toma agua porque le tiene miedo a los microbios. No come tomate porque, créalo o no, porque supone que es veneno. No le gusta la comida mexicana. Dice que es muy picante. El gringo típico es rico. Vive en un hotel y gasta mucho dinero. No tiene respeto para con los mexicanos, no aprecia nuestras costumbres.
El gringo típico piensa que todos los mexicanos son bandidos o tontos. Piensa que México es una colo- nia norteamericana. ¡Imagínese! Nosotros tomamos a este tipo de personas por idiotas ignorantes. Sin embargo no todos los gringos son tontos. Por ejemplo, los voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz no son tontos. Ellos son diferentes, distintos. Ellos hablan y entienden español, saben leer y escribir nuestra lengua, y están acostumbrados a la comida picante. A ellos les gusta comer tacos, enchiladas, chiles rellenos. Los voluntarios del cuerpo de paz aprecian a la gente mexicana y sus costumbres. Ellos viven, comen y andan con el pueblo. Claro que no todos los voluntarios son iguales. Algunos son inteligentes, pero otros no. Algunos son disciplinados y diligentes, pero otros no. Algunos trabajan arduamente, pero otros no...
