Physics

A baseball catcher moves his glove away from a 40.5 m/s fastball as he catches it. If the average force he exerts on the ball is 1.01 103 N, how far does the glove move? Assume constant deceleration of the ball, which has a mass of 0.144 kg.

  1. -1.01 * 10^3 N = .144 a
    a = -7.01 * 10^3 m/s^2

    v = Vi + a t
    at the end, v = 0
    0 = 40.5 - 7.01*10^3 t
    so
    t = time to stop = 5.77 * 10^-3 seconds

    d = Vi t + (1/2) a t^2
    = 40.5 * 5.77*10^-3 - 3.5*10^3 (5.77)^2 *10^-6
    = 234 *10^-3 - 117*10^-3
    = 117*10^-3
    = .117 meteres
