    Obviously, you didn't read anything in those posts. Here's what Reed said to get you started.

    "The "new" west was territory opened for settlement west of the Mississippi River and/or acquired in the Mexican War (1846-48). The "free" north were the states north of the Mason Dixon line that were free of slavery. "
