I have to find the simple subject and simple predicate in this sentence. Several North American cultures built large mounds of earth thousands of years ago and used them as burial places and foundations for buildings.(note that some subjects and predicates are compound)

In that sentence I see one word which is the simple subject, and I see two words which make up the simple predicate -- it's known as a compound verb.

Several North American cultures

built large mounds of earth thousands of years ago and

used them as burial places and foundations for buildings.
