If you are writing an essay, you are telling, not showing. I suspect what is needed is that you not merely describe the subject of the picture as in people or landscape (whatever), but describe the use of color, composition, etc., to explain how and why the picture prompts an emotional and/or intellectual response in you, the viewer.
