Cassius tries to win over Brutus in William Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar" because he sees him as a respected and honorable figure who holds influence over the people. Cassius is aware that Brutus' reputation is built on his noble character and deep sense of duty. By persuading Brutus to join their conspiracy against Caesar, Cassius believes that they can gain legitimacy and support from the Roman citizens.

The effectiveness of this technique on Brutus can be attributed to a few key factors:

1. Friendship: Cassius and Brutus share a close friendship, which can influence Brutus to be more receptive to Cassius' ideas and arguments. Friends often have a certain level of trust and openness towards each other, making it easier for Cassius to communicate and persuade Brutus.

2. Manipulation of Brutus' ideals: Cassius is aware of Brutus' strong belief in the Roman Republic and his desire to protect it from tyranny. To win Brutus over, Cassius plays into these ideals, appealing to his sense of duty and convincing him that Caesar poses a threat to the Republic's freedom. By framing the conspiracy as a noble act in defense of their shared values, Cassius is able to tap into Brutus' moral compass.

3. Flattery: Cassius utilizes flattery to manipulate Brutus. He highlights Brutus' virtues and magnifies his importance in order to boost his ego and make him feel crucial to the cause. Cassius constantly reminds Brutus of his respected reputation and how his involvement will lend credibility to their mission. By appealing to his pride and desire for honor, Cassius gains a stronger influence over Brutus.

Overall, Cassius recognizes Brutus' character, values, friendship, and desires, and he expertly tailors his approach to win him over to their cause.
