The term was used from around the mid-eighteenth century to describe those people below the aristocracy but above the workers. As a social category, the 'middling sort' always referred to a broad band of the population, but this diversity increased in the nineteenth century. To determine who would be included in the middle class, we need to understand the concept of income distribution and the measurement used to define different income groups.

When defining the middle class, different countries and organizations may have varying criteria. However, a common approach is to use income-based measures. In this context, the middle class is typically defined as the socio-economic group that falls between the lower income group (often referred to as the lower class or working class) and the upper income group (often referred to as the upper class or wealthy class).

To identify individuals who would be included in the middle class, we need to consider factors such as income, education level, occupation, standard of living, and social status. While income is the primary criterion, other factors can also be considered to form a more holistic picture of the middle class. These factors may include ownership of assets, access to healthcare, level of consumption, and participation in economic activities.

The specific income range or threshold defining the middle class varies between countries and can change over time due to factors such as inflation and economic growth. Statistical agencies and researchers often use various statistical measures to determine income thresholds for the middle class. These measures include median household income, income percentiles, or calculations based on a specific percentage above or below the median income.

It is important to note that the concept of the middle class is subjective and can be influenced by cultural and societal norms. Therefore, the composition and characteristics of the middle class can differ across countries and regions.
