How many hydrogen bonds can each (i) water and (ii) ice molecule form?

According to Wikipedia the water molecule in liquid water is (H2O)4(actually a little less than 4 on average about 3.6 or so) for liquid at zero C and (H2O)3 at 100 C.

You can read the details here.

Here is another site that agrees with this and talks about ice have (H2O)4.
