You have a 5/16 in. drill bit. Will it drill a hole large enough to fit a 5 mm bolt? Show two different ways to answer this question. Explain your thinking.

I couldn't even figure out the first way. Please help!

1 inch = 2.54 cm

then 5/6 inches = (5/16)(2.54) cm
= appr .794 cm
= 7.94 mm , yes it will fit but very loosely

2nd way
2.54 cm = 1 inch
1 cm = 1/2.54
10 mm = 1/2.54 inches
5 mm = 1/5.08 inche = appr .1969 inches
which is less than 5/16 inches
so it will fit, but just as loose as before.

The first way to answer this question is by converting the measurements to a common unit and comparing them.

1. Convert 5/16 inch to millimeters:
To convert inches to millimeters, multiply the inch value by 25.4. Therefore, we have:
5/16 * 25.4 = 127/16 ≈ 7.94 mm.

Now we can compare the converted measurement to the size of the bolt:
If the drill bit is 7.94 mm or larger, it will be able to fit the 5 mm bolt. So in this case, the 5/16 inch drill bit should be able to drill a hole large enough to fit a 5 mm bolt.

The second way to answer this question is to compare the sizes directly using a comparison chart or table.

2. Use a conversion chart:
By referring to a conversion chart that compares drill bit sizes in inches to their corresponding sizes in millimeters, we can look up the size of a 5/16 inch drill bit and compare it to the size of a 5 mm bolt.

According to most conversion charts, a 5/16 inch drill bit generally measures around 7.94 mm, while a 5 mm bolt is exactly 5 mm in diameter.

Therefore, by comparing the sizes directly, we can see that a 5/16 inch drill bit is indeed larger than a 5 mm bolt, indicating that it should be able to drill a hole large enough to fit the bolt.

So, both methods confirm that a 5/16 inch drill bit will drill a hole large enough to accommodate a 5 mm bolt.
