Solve. 3/2 x - 4 = 16
x = 20
x = 13 1/3
x = 15 1/3
30
i got x = 16 and in decimal form 13.333 and even others! I'm going for 13 1/3 or 15 1/3. Help?
you can't just write things down .
I hope nobody showed you how to solve equations that way.
remember, "whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other
3/2 x - 4 = 16
Add 4 to both sides
3/2 x = 20
multiply both sides by 2
3x = 40
now divide both sides by 3
x = 40/3
check:
if x = 20
LEFT Side = (3/2)(40/3) - 4
= 20 - 4 = 16
Right Side = 16
LS = RS , so my answer of 40/3 is correct
of course 40/3 could also be written as 13 1/3 , which was your answer.
I just don't like the way you present your solution
What is the aswers to the test!!!!!
To solve the equation 3/2x - 4 = 16, we need to isolate the variable x. Here's how to find the correct solution:
Step 1: Add 4 to both sides of the equation to eliminate the constant term on the left side:
3/2x - 4 + 4 = 16 + 4
3/2x = 20
Step 2: To get rid of the fraction, multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of 3/2, which is 2/3:
(2/3)(3/2x) = (2/3)(20)
x = 40/3
x = 13 1/3
So, the correct solution is x = 13 1/3.
It seems like you also obtained x = 15 1/3. Let's check if that is correct by substituting it back into the original equation:
3/2(15 1/3) - 4 = 16
To work with mixed numbers, we can convert 15 1/3 to an improper fraction: 15 1/3 = (3 * 15 + 1) / 3 = 46/3.
Now, substitute x = 46/3 into the equation:
3/2 * (46/3) - 4 = 16
(3/2) * (46/3) - 4 = 16
(3*46)/(2*3) - 4 = 16
69/2 - 4 = 16
34.5 - 4 = 16
30.5 ≠ 16
As you can see, x = 15 1/3 does not satisfy the equation, so it is not the correct solution. Therefore, the only correct solution is x = 13 1/3.
