What did Rousseau mean when he stated that if any individual wants to pursue his own self-interest at the expense of the common good, "He will be forced to be free"?
I would take that to mean that the community (where people live for the common good) would force him out. If he doesn't want to live within their "social contract," then he's free to leave ... and wing it on his own!
They're going to kick him out if he doesn't play by their rules.
What happens in today's society if a person kill another person and it's proven in court? The killer is put in prison, right? Maybe eventually executed. Aren't those forms of kicking him out?
